In the past 25 years cargo throughput in the port has risen spectacularly. With approximately 10,000 ships every year and a cargo volume of 45 million tons, Zeebrugge is one of Europe's fastest growing ports.

The port of Bruges-Zeebrugge has several functions; here's just a shortlist of the main ones:

• intense roro traffic between Continental Europe,Great Britain, Scandinavia and Southern Europe. From Zeebrugge all European countries can be served within 24 to 48 hours. Zeebrugge also offers a wide range of intercontinental roro services for the worldwide shipment of new cars.
• the handling of  large container carriers which link Zeebrugge with all major intercontinental destinations ;
• the supply of  LNG and energy products;
• the  supply of perishables and other agricultural products;
• the handling and storage of general cargo  and 'high & heavy' cargoes 
• the transport of passengers.
